"And David said, 'The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.'"
1 Samuel 17:37
David exhibited great faith and courage as he faced Goliath's challenge. Why was he so bold when other experienced Israeli soldiers were fearful?
David based his courageous acts on the faithfulness of God. God had spared him in the pasture as he defended the family's flock against lions and bears. David knew God would be faithful to fight for him against the blasphemous giant Goliath.
David's actions speak volumes to us today. When we are facing a difficult challenge, we must stand firm in our reliance on the faithfulness of God. He does not change. He does not fail. He fights for us. He is our great deliverer. It's not about us, it's all about Him.
Let us take our giants and the battles we face to the Living God. He will fight in our behalf. Our part is to trust Him and step out in faith.

"Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Thy law."
"Establish Thy word to Thy servant, as that which produces reverence for Thee."
"Teach me good discernment and knowledge, for I believe in Thy commandments."
Psalm 119:18, 38, 66
These passages shape my daily walk with God. Please allow me to share the thought progression from this great Psalm.
First, I approach the word of God with a prayer for illumination, that God would "open my eyes" and allow me to behold His wonderful truth.
Second, I approach the word of God with a desire to be worshipful, that God would "produce reverence for" Himself in me. This honors the spirit of the model prayer, wherein Jesus made it clear our first objective is to "hallow" (or revere, honor) God's name.
Finally, I approach the word of God with a confident assurance that God will "teach me," that as I commit to His word by faith the Holy Spirit will guide me into truth and grant me real discernment. Jesus promised this would be a primary work of the Spirit.
As we approach God's word with these principles in focus, we come to the blessed place the psalmist speaks of in v.45 -
"And I will walk in a wide place, for I seek Thy precepts."
May this be, by His grace, our daily experience as we walk according to His word in the power of His Spirit.

"But now take courage, Zerubbabel...take courage, Joshua...all you people of the land take courage...and work, for I am with you...My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!"
Haggai 2:4-5
The exiles returned to Jerusalem with a mandate to rebuild the temple. They began the work, but soon encountered opposition and eventual shut down (Ezra 4:24). The people abandoned the cause and went about building their own homes and getting reestablished in the region.
God sent His prophet to stir the leaders and people to action. He admonished them, three times, to be courageous (lit., be strong) and resume the work God had commissioned. He assured them of His presence in their midst and of His blessing upon the work.
God gave us a task, also. He wants us engaged in the work of building His dwelling, the church. Jesus told us things are different now. God no longer manifests His presence in a fixed site like the temple. Now, He manifests His presence in the lives of believers, who, as an assembled people, form the true tabernacle of God - the Church universal.
May we be strong and courageous as we serve in our ambassador role to represent the Living God to this estranged world. Do not fear...let us arise and build. God is in our midst!
